The Face of the Moon

Enlarged image

This plate is probably the most eye-catching of the series. The photograph, taken July 26,1896, shows the terminator on four large eastern craters: Langrenus, Vendelinus, Petavius, and Furnerius (bottom to top). The Rheita valley can also be seen to the right of Furnerius. The photograph may be compared to the drawing made by Mayer in 1749, with the terminator in virtually the same position (see item 25.)
